3) Corolla Wild Ponies
As you drive along the gorgeous beach at Corolla, even knowing in advance what you are in for, horses are still not something you expect to see galloping over the sand. Descendants of the mustangs first brought to this beach by Spanish conquistadors, these horses are wild and beautiful. They only appear when you go a little off the centre of the beach as they like to stay out of the way of people and the developments springing up at Corolla. Sometimes hard to find with their dwindling numbers, it is a good idea to get a tour from a local so that you’re guaranteed a chance to see them. With their mysterious history and centuries old heritage, these horses are a sight to behold. Visit them in a Hummer via one of the guided tours you can arrange, or drive along the beach to see them – just be careful not to get stuck in the sand. These horses are an amazing part of history, and are a great experience for all ages and personalities.
