Chicago is often considered to be the cleaner and less chaotic little sister to New York. With a similar public transit system and iconic skyscrapers, the Windy City is a lovely option for satisfying your metropolitan hunger without having to experience the unappetizing aroma of “trash day.” Chicago is also less expensive than New York in many areas. The cost of living is closer to the midwestern median, and finding hotels on a budget can be done through a quick internet search. Hotels near the downtown loop are naturally higher in price, but many four-star resorts will release last minute deals along the lakefront to fill up any remaining rooms on a slow week night. For weekend visitors, finding a hotel for under $100 per night is more feasible in a nearby suburb such as Oak Park or Downers Grove, which all provide easy access to the city via the Chicago Metro train system. Major chains are abundant throughout the suburbs, and rooms are especially easy to afford during the winter. Just anticipate a heavy dose of lake effect snow if you plan to visit in February!
