11) North County, San Diego, California
San Diego’s popular Gaslamp Quarter is undoubtedly expensive. However, downtown San Diego is just a small part of the area. The further north you go in San Diego County, the more charming it gets. Small, beachside cities like Encinitas, Carlsbad, and Oceanside offer tourists a super authentic visit and laid-back vibes for days. North County is proud of its craft brewery scene. Days can be spent hopping from popular brewers like Stone, Oceanside Ale Works, and Pizza Port. There’s also an almost uninterrupted beach starting from downtown tracing up the northern coastline, ensuring there’s always sand to lounge on and waves to surf. Check out Encinitas for funky thrift shops, Carlsbad for its charming central shopping area and bars, and Oceanside for lots of trendy, gastro pub-style eateries. Three-star hotels in these areas start around $100/night and food and drink in general are cheaper than downtown San Diego.
