The leading causes of death in the state are heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory diseases, and accidents, in that order. The state ranks 4th in the nation for deaths resulting from heart disease and 5th for deaths from Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and cancer. The state’s infant mortality rate is 8.65 deaths per 1,000 live births, which is higher than the national average of 5.96. Statistics indicate that about 13% of the state’s residents are uninsured, which will impact their ability to get the proper healthcare.
