10 US States with the Lowest Life Expectancy

4) Kentucky

Coming in at 7th in the country for shorter life spans is Kentucky where a resident can expect to live 76 years on average. Between 2010 and 2015 the state population increased 1.98%, which keeps with the record of the state’s population continuing to grow every decade since recordkeeping began. The state reports the total mortality rate to be 904 deaths per 100,000 people, with the premature death rate (years lost per 100,000 people) being 9,422. The state credits the large prevalence of obesity and people who are overweight with contributing to the shortened life spans. Also, 26% of adults in Kentucky smoke and 14% of adults reportedly participated in binge drinking during the previous year.
