2) District of Columbia
Coming in 9th for lowest life expectancy in the country is the District of Columbia. Our nation’s capital has the highest number of residents with health insurance coverage, with 90% of the population being covered. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated there is an epidemic of HIV and AIDS in the city with at least 3% of the population of D.C. being infected. The city has a high number of violent crimes. Even with declining by nearly half since the mid-1990s when it peaked, the murder rate has increased after having reached its historic low in 2012. The mortality rate is impacted by the crime rate and the HIV epidemic. The average lifespan for D.C. is 76.5 years.
