5) Australia
Australia is tied with Spain for average longevity. Men live to be 80.9 on average and women to 84.8. The Australian Institute for Health and Welfare chalks this up to great improvements in health care that have helped prevent many acute illnesses. This has not only extended the lifespan of citizens, but also the number of years they live without disability. Like other countries, Australia faces challenges in the form of chronic illnesses related to lifestyle. It has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world and smoking is the leading preventable cause of death. It also ranked 35th for obesity by the WHO (The United States came in at 19). In 2014, Bloomberg analyzed the efficiency of healthcare systems in 55 countries. Australia came in 10th, while the United States was ranked 50th.
