6) Big Sur
Big Sur is a gorgeous, drivable stretch of mountainous coastline. The isolation of the area has appealed to many famous writers, including Hunter S. Thompson, Henry Miller and Jack Kerouac. There are a number of places to take stunning photos, such as Bixby Bridge and McWay Falls. Pfeiffer Beach is popular with locals, but can be hard to find at the end of the unmarked Sycamore Canyon Road. Sand Dollar Beach is known for its bluffs and jade. It’s also the longest stretch of beach in Big Sur. Hotels along the stretch are not cheap, but it’s not necessary to spend the night. Visitors can save by staying at either end. Santa Cruz, Carmel and Monterey are all within reach.
