6) Portland, Maine
There’s something utterly charming about America’s glorious former port towns with their beautiful waterfronts, cobblestone streets and historic buildings and Portland, Maine is no exception. Located on a peninsula at Casco Bay, Portland was once a fishing village that grew into a thriving port, complete with handsome red brick buildings that now house some of the coolest cafes and bars in the city. Couples will love Portland’s museums and art galleries and downtown Portland’s Western promenade with its impressive 19th century mansions and cute B&Bs. The working fishermen wharves and Commercial St, which runs the length of the harbour, keep strolling couples walking hand in hand from day until night. Organised wine-tasting, food and cocktail tours are rising in popularity and on the first Friday of every month visitors can take part in the monthly Art Walk.
